The University of Texas iSchool and Law School provide a combined degree pathway that awards both a Master of Science in Information Studies (MS) and a Juris Doctor (JD). This integrated program addresses the growing demand for professionals skilled in both disciplines, equipping them to navigate the evolving challenges of legal information management. Students can complete both degrees in three years, including one summer term, while meeting all curriculum requirements for each program.
UT Austin boasts distinguished programs in both information studies and legal education. The schools' reputations for excellence create an ideal environment for students to develop interdisciplinary expertise. Typically, five or more JD candidates pursue graduate studies in the iSchool simultaneously, frequently enrolling in its top-ranked law librarianship program (ranked #2 nationally by U.S. News & World Report in 2007). Many iSchool alumni secure positions in government agencies and research institutions that require combined legal and information expertise, such as the Congressional Research Service, Department of Defense, and various state libraries. The dual degree program specifically prepares students for these specialized career paths.
