The Master's Program in Community and Regional Planning (CRP) equips students with theoretical knowledge, specialized skills, and hands-on training for successful careers in professional planning and policy fields. The 48-credit curriculum involves completing a Master's Professional Report or Thesis.
Students must finish 3 core classes, 4 methodology courses, a 6-hour planning practicum, and either a professional report or thesis. Though optional, an internship is strongly advised for those opting for the professional report track. Core courses follow a sequential structure. The program offers diverse elective options, allowing students to tailor their studies to align with career aspirations.
The Planning Practicum is an immersive, application-based course where students tackle real-world planning challenges, frequently collaborating with external partners. Some practicums may span two semesters as two 3-credit courses. Occasionally, studio courses in Urban Design, Historic Preservation, or similar disciplines may fulfill the Practicum requirement, pending approval from the CRP Graduate Adviser.
Though not mandatory, internships remain popular among students for their practical benefits. These positions typically involve planning-related work in public, nonprofit, or private organizations. For academic credit, students must provide: an employer verification letter upon enrollment, complete 300 internship hours, submit a completion confirmation letter, and either a reflective report or work samples to the CRP Graduate Adviser. Internship credit applies only once toward the MSCRP degree.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
Application deadline: December 16 for fall
