Students in urban and regional studies planning programs develop skills to tackle issues such as urban expansion, economic disparities, intergroup tensions, and ecological decline. Wilder School participants collaborate with local groups across Richmond, a culturally rich city with deep historical roots. The Master of Urban and Regional Planning program merges scholarly excellence, access to leading practitioners, and practical applications to enhance communities' social, economic, and environmental health. Recognized by the Planning Accreditation Board, this M.U.R.P. curriculum blends theoretical knowledge with fieldwork, equipping learners with essential technical and analytical capabilities for creating and executing development strategies. Practical learning occurs through interactive teaching, real-world studio assignments, and mandatory internships with our partners in government, business, and social sectors working on innovative planning projects. The program structure offers adaptability for both traditional students and employed professionals pursuing studies part-time. M.U.R.P. candidates can focus on particular planning specialties or expand their expertise through supplementary certifications and combined degree options.
In addition to the general admission requirements of the VCU Graduate School, the following specifications apply:
Students must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.7 (on a 4.0 scale).
Students not meeting these requirements may be admitted to the program on a provisional basis. The provisional period shall consist of the first nine-to-12 hours of designated graduate work in which all grades must be, at minimum, a B.
Generally, at least two of the three letters of reference should come from former faculty.
All courses in the graduate certificates in Geographic Information Systems, Sustainability Planning or Urban Revitalization may be applied to meet the requirements of the Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree. However, successful completion of one of these certificate programs does not guarantee admission into the M.U.R.P. degree program.
