The Studio Art graduate program embraces diverse artistic explorations, including spatial, lens-based, two-dimensional, interactive, sound, and performance-based work. As a multidisciplinary program, we structure our approach around the broad domains of Painting & Drawing, Photography & Media, Print, Sculpture & Extended Media, and Transmedia.
MFA candidates collaborate with engaged, professional faculty to refine existing skills and cultivate fresh conceptual and technical methodologies. Our program fosters a vibrant yet nurturing community where students engage in continuous discovery, examining the depths of their chosen discipline while being inspired to venture into new territories and uncover innovative connections.
When fully utilized, our flexible curriculum adapts to each student's interests while leveraging the department's resources and the broader academic strengths of The University of Texas at Austin. The program offers diverse course selections, granting MFA students increasing studio time as their research grows more specialized and intensive. Sculpture & Extended Media offers students comprehensive opportunities to expand both technical abilities and conceptual frameworks within sculpture's evolving landscape. Our faculty's strength lies in their capacity to draw from extensive knowledge and experience, offering fresh perspectives on emerging artistic and cultural trends. The program's core mission is to foster—through critical discussion and dialogue—an inventive investigation of materiality and its expressive potential.
