MFA candidates collaborate with engaged, practicing faculty to refine existing abilities and cultivate fresh conceptual and technical methodologies. We foster a nurturing yet challenging community where students engage in continuous discovery, examining the depths of their chosen field while being inspired to venture into new territories and uncover innovative connections.
When fully utilized, our flexible curriculum adapts to each student's focus while leveraging the department's resources and the broader academic strengths of The University of Texas at Austin. The program offers extensive course selections, providing increasing studio time as MFA students' research grows more specialized and intensive. Participants cultivate their artistic identity, developing both visual creation skills and critical engagement with contemporary art discourse. Through continuous exchanges with faculty, peers, and visiting experts, students gain profound insights into artistic practice.
Print students investigate multiple technical, aesthetic, and conceptual directions. Instead of focusing on one technique, they experience diverse printmaking processes. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, students master foundational print skills while innovating and expanding the medium's possibilities. This area hosts the dynamic Guest Artist in Print Program (GAPP), bringing contemporary print artists for week-long residencies to create new work with faculty and student collaboration. Visiting artists also deliver public talks and interact with students through studio critiques, workshops, and classroom engagements.
