The PhD in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures and the MA in Middle Eastern Studies incorporate diverse critical methodologies for examining the Middle East. Rather than confining students to nation- or language-specific studies, our graduate programs promote regional perspectives, fostering comparative analyses of Middle Eastern cultures, histories, and languages. Reflecting this broad approach, the programs emphasize multilingual proficiency and cross-cultural understanding across the region. The curriculum features an extensive range of courses, with equally diverse thesis/dissertation topics. UT's graduate programs maintain a comprehensive vision of the discipline, reinforcing its prominence in the field.
Administered by the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, the MA program maintains rigorous engagement with the region's multifaceted scholarship. Faculty contribute specialized courses across disciplines—including art history, Asian studies, history, sociology, government, anthropology, and religious studies—ensuring curricular breadth.
Beyond the standalone MA, the Center offers seven dual-degree options combining Middle Eastern studies with professional degrees from other UT schools. Students may also complement their studies with interdisciplinary portfolios aligned with their research focus.
