The University of Texas at Austin provides a Master of Arts in Mathematics with a specialization in actuarial studies. This program is designed for students seeking academic preparation for SOA and CAS examinations including FAM, ALTAM, ASTAM, SRM MAS-I, and MAS-II. Applicants who have previously studied this material or passed any of these exams typically won't be admitted and are encouraged to consider more comprehensive actuarial programs at other institutions.
This M.A. program serves as a career-focused pathway, equipping students with the knowledge needed for entry-level actuarial positions in the U.S. Funded by the State of Texas and backed by actuarial firms nationwide, the program aims to produce graduates ready for industry recruitment. International students who aren't U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents often face greater challenges securing actuarial internships and employment in the United States.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
