The University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Institute stands as the premier and longest-standing marine research center along the Texas shoreline. We're transforming global perspectives on oceanic and coastal systems while preparing communities worldwide that rely on marine environments. What started modestly in 1941 as a simple wooden structure along Port Aransas' Gulf Coast has evolved into a hub for innovative research, academic programs, and community engagement.
Earning a Ph.D. in Marine Science demands four to six years of graduate work, incorporating original research and teaching assistant responsibilities. The doctoral curriculum requires at minimum 21 credit hours in marine science coursework plus 6 hours in complementary fields, alongside dissertation work and supervised teaching. Within these 21 credits, students must complete 12 hours of core curriculum as outlined in the Graduate Catalog. Supplementary coursework from external institutions may count toward supporting requirements. Before advancing to candidacy, doctoral students must finish core courses and pass a comprehensive exam in their specialization while demonstrating proficiency in three additional subfields. Most students fulfill these candidacy prerequisites by their second year. Final degree completion involves producing an original research dissertation and successfully defending it orally.
UTMSI's research spans multiple scientific fields, with particular focus on Fish Biology and Ecosystems, Environmental System Interactions, and Chemical Oceanography. Our investigations range from microscopic analyses to large-scale ecological assessments and coastal biogeochemical research. Geological and oceanographic principles are integrated into our Texas coastal zone studies and training initiatives.
Minimum requirements for regular admission to graduate study in the department of marine science:
