The graduate program at The University of Texas at Austin's School of Journalism and Media ranks among the nation's top-tier programs. Students can pursue three different degree options: a Ph.D., a Master's in Research and Theory, or a Professional-track Master's in Journalism.
Our Ph.D. program stands as one of the leading journalism and media programs nationwide. Guided by faculty members with exceptional research backgrounds and publishing achievements—many bringing professional media experience—the curriculum provides students with robust theoretical foundations and diverse research methodologies.
The Professional Track MA degree emphasizes practical media production skills, while the Research & Theory MA equips students with advanced methodological training combined with journalism knowledge, preparing them for doctoral studies or analytical roles within media institutions.
Recognized as one of the top journalism and media doctoral programs in the country, our faculty—comprising accomplished researchers and media professionals—ensures students develop comprehensive theoretical understanding and flexible research approaches. Alumni from our four-year program secure academic positions and opportunities with think tanks, NGOs, advocacy groups, and professional associations focused on media and information systems.
