The PhD is an advanced research-focused degree. While our doctoral candidates complete coursework to establish a strong knowledge base, the primary emphasis of the PhD program is training students to perform exceptional research. We require all PhD candidates to engage in research starting their first semester (refer to the Research Immersion section) and maintain this involvement during their entire tenure at UT. To explore how our doctoral students contribute to our research initiatives, visit our dedicated research pages. This early research engagement means our PhD students frequently gain recognition in the broader academic community long before completing their degrees. They routinely attend conferences, deliver presentations, and frequently earn prestigious paper awards. The College of Natural Sciences offers unparalleled research and educational opportunities across 12 departments spanning life sciences, physical sciences, human sciences, and mathematics, data & computational sciences.
