The jazz program's primary objective is to cultivate accomplished performers and composers who will emerge as influential collaborators in the years ahead. Students pursuing jazz studies can refine their abilities through diverse performance settings, including large ensembles, composition-focused groups, intimate combos, and peer-led jam sessions.
Our distinguished jazz instructors are active professional musicians whose expertise covers the full range of the music field, dedicated to helping students achieve technical excellence while nurturing their unique creative voices. Beyond weekly one-on-one lessons with faculty artists, the curriculum includes comprehensive training in jazz and classical music theory, historical studies, ensemble participation, and performance showcases. The program's vibrant artistic environment is enriched by regular visits from guest artists and clinicians—recently featuring Conrad Herwig—plus the prestigious Longhorn Jazz Festival held each year.
