Students enrolled in the BMus program for theory and composition must select a specialization in either theory or composition. Fulfilling the requirements for the theory specialization leads to earning a degree in either theory or composition.
Those who choose the theory concentration will study courses covering diverse aspects of the field, including tonal harmony, structural analysis, counterpoint, contemporary music topics, composition techniques, and jazz/popular music. They'll collaborate with faculty experts whose research spans classical music, cognitive studies of music, and cutting-edge analytical methods.
This program can serve as foundational preparation for pursuing advanced degrees like a master's or PhD in music theory or other graduate-level music studies.
