Picture analyzing the structure of something so vast it houses a million inhabitants. As an Urban Studies student, the Austin metro area serves as both your community and a dynamic case study available for exploration around the clock, employing techniques valued by urban planners, real estate developers, nonprofit professionals, and academics specializing in urban history, anthropology, sociology, and related disciplines.
Urban Studies at UT is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program blending academic coursework with hands-on learning in the Austin region. Whether you're fascinated by city design, urban development history, the tensions and innovations of metropolitan living, economic influences on urban expansion, or the politics of city management, this major offers a place for your curiosity. It also provides excellent preparation for meaningful careers addressing critical societal and environmental challenges—equipping students with analytical tools to tackle issues like poverty, housing insecurity, racial inequality, environmental degradation, and transportation inefficiencies.
The program offers significant flexibility. Students select from diverse courses representing multiple academic viewpoints, tailored to their aspirations. Following foundational courses in urban studies (URB 301) and research methods (URB 315), students explore specialized topics through upper-level classes spanning 18 departments across 6 UT colleges. Seniors gain practical experience through an internship and service learning course (URB 360), building job-ready skills. The curriculum culminates with an independent research project (URB 370), mentored by a faculty member, allowing students to demonstrate specialized knowledge that impresses potential employers or graduate admissions committees.
