It's important to recognize that studying Spanish and Portuguese extends beyond international applications. Businesses actively seek adaptable professionals with cross-cultural awareness, creative problem-solving abilities, and multilingual communication skills across diverse platforms. Our curriculum develops essential competencies including: Analytical Reasoning, Interpersonal Skills, Adaptability, Cultural Awareness, Creative Thinking, Effective Communication, Information Processing, Global Perspective, Ethical Decision-Making, and Digital Literacy.
The Spanish and Portuguese Department fosters comprehensive engagement with the diverse cultures we study, tracing their origins on the Iberian Peninsula and in the Americas through their contemporary expressions across Europe, Africa, and the Western Hemisphere.
We maintain a rigorous academic framework that incorporates cutting-edge faculty research at all degree levels. Our core program forms a vital component of UT's Liberal Arts education, cultivating student proficiency in language, literature, and cultural studies while building fundamental capabilities in analytical reasoning, persuasive writing, and verbal expression in Spanish and Portuguese. Faculty members further enhance undergraduate learning through the School of Undergraduate Studies, notably via the Signature Courses initiative and interdisciplinary programs like Bridging Disciplines, with specialized coursework in Cinema Studies, Social Equity, and Cultural Analysis.
