Earning a French major requires completing at least 24 credit hours beyond FRE 201, maintaining a minimum grade of C- in all major courses and an overall GPA of 2.5 within the major (refer to curriculum for specific course requirements). This program equips students with advanced language skills and deep cultural-literary understanding of French-speaking communities. Through coursework, learners enhance their ability to communicate effectively while developing critical perspectives on the cultures they study. Students not only analyze communication styles and cultural artifacts (including digital media, cinema, and literature) from diverse global perspectives, but also gain fresh insights into their own language and society. The curriculum cultivates analytical thinking by teaching students to construct logical arguments both verbally and in writing, interpret various texts, conduct research, write analytical papers, assess information sources, understand linguistic contexts, and appreciate language as artistic expression. Additionally, students develop comprehensive knowledge of the target language's history, literature, and cultural traditions. The program ultimately enables learners to make meaningful cultural comparisons and reevaluate their own cultural background through a new lens.
