The Languages program provides two major choices (primary and secondary) along with a minor option. Across all three paths, students can achieve fluency in two languages selected from the Department of Languages, Cultures, and Literatures' offerings, which include Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Ancient Greek, Italian, Japanese, Latin, or Russian. Students also have the flexibility to replace one of these languages with Spanish, Portuguese, Navajo, or ASL.
Beyond language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), Languages students develop cultural understanding of the communities that speak these languages. This includes exploring their historical evolution, social values, and unique cultural aspects. The program prepares students with the linguistic foundation and enthusiasm to fully participate in UNM's diverse study abroad opportunities.
