Anthropology (meaning "the study of humanity") encompasses an exceptionally wide-ranging discipline that examines all facets of human existence across time - from ancient history to contemporary societies and future possibilities. At the University of Tennessee, Anthropology students explore this expansive scope through coursework in Cultural, Biological, and Archaeological Anthropology. Faculty and graduate researchers in our Department pursue investigations as varied in subject matter and global reach as the discipline itself. This research, backed by leading funding institutions, is showcased at academic conferences and appears in prestigious journals and university publications. We actively engage with the broader community through various educational outreach initiatives. Our professors sustain productive partnerships with diverse entities including government agencies, private institutions, international bodies, NGOs, and local community groups. The Anthropology Department provides a Master of Arts degree with specializations available in archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and Mediterranean archaeology. Prospective graduate students can find further details about our programs on the department website or by reaching out directly to our offices.
