Established in 1869, the Herbert College of Agriculture (Herbert) originated when the university became Tennessee's designated land-grant institution under federal legislation. This status allowed the university to introduce agricultural education for the first time. Subsequent federal laws supported agricultural research and created extension programs to share discoveries with Tennessee communities. The college gradually broadened its curriculum from conventional agriculture studies to encompass natural resources and agribusiness. Presently, its academic programs cover the full spectrum of contemporary natural resource and agricultural sciences. Together with UT AgResearch (previously known as the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station), UT Extension, and the College of Veterinary Medicine, Herbert forms part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture.
