The Biology Department at San Diego State University provides outstanding academic programs, with instruction delivered by more than 35 dedicated, research-focused faculty members. We support and guide around 1,300 undergraduate students majoring in Biology and Microbiology, 80 minors, over 150 graduate students, and numerous students from other disciplines. SDSU presents a diverse selection of courses in cellular and molecular biology, ecology, evolution, and allied subjects. Each semester, undergraduates can choose from more than 50 available courses. Most classes maintain fewer than 30 students, or include lab sections with under 25 participants. Our department stands out for its extensive lab and field-based course offerings compared to peer institutions. Graduate students lead lower-division lab instruction (rather than undergraduates), while faculty members frequently teach upper-division labs. With our strong focus on hands-on laboratory experiences, practical learning, and research opportunities, our graduates gain exceptional preparation for careers in biology, healthcare professions, or advanced academic pursuits.
