The College of Music aims to deliver exceptional training in musical disciplines while fostering innovation and scholarship across composition, education, musicology, teaching methods, performance, and theory. Through this mission, it enhances the cultural and academic experiences of students, the broader university population, and Tennessee residents. Prospective music students (both first-year and transfers) must complete an applied music audition and theory assessment. Those pursuing music education, musicology, or music theory/composition must additionally interview with relevant faculty. Official music major status requires passing the audition and, where applicable, completing the interview. A theory placement test will also be administered. These evaluations determine appropriate course levels for applied music and theory studies. Candidates should fulfill audition, testing, and interview requirements during a campus visit before starting classes. Early scheduling with the College of Music is strongly encouraged, preferably before summer orientation. Music education candidates follow identical audition processes as performance majors. After their second year or upon finishing prerequisite coursework, students undergo an Admissions Board review. Successful candidates gain entry to the Teacher Education Program, qualifying them for advanced education coursework.
