The Music Division aims to foster a deep appreciation for musical artistry through top-tier educational programs. Serving the wider University population, it provides foundational music courses, ensemble performance experiences, private instruction, introductory classes in piano, voice, and guitar, along with Music minor options. The Bachelor of Music program equips students for professional music careers, with graduates gaining skills to: 1) accurately interpret sheet music and recognize performance inaccuracies, 2) evaluate and distinguish fundamental components in musical works and renditions, 3) deliver technically proficient performances adhering to stylistic traditions. Admission and graduation standards align with National Association of Schools of Music guidelines and Tennessee teacher certification requirements. Two undergraduate degrees are available: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music and Bachelor of Music (B.M.), the latter offering five specializations: instrumental performance, vocal performance, composition, instrumental music education, and vocal music education. The B.M. curriculum focuses intensively on musical training, with music coursework comprising about 65% of the four-year program. The music education track prepares future K-12 music educators, blending core academics with specialized music pedagogy in a carefully structured sequence. Program completers receive teaching certification. All music degrees provide solid foundations for advanced graduate studies.
