The College of Music aims to deliver exceptional training in musical arts while fostering innovation and scholarly work across composition, education, music history, teaching methods, performance, and music theory. Through its programs, the college enhances musical experiences for students, the university population, and Tennessee residents. Prospective music students (both first-year and transfers) must complete an applied music audition and theory assessment. Those pursuing music education, music history, or music theory/composition must also interview with relevant faculty. Official music major status requires passing the audition and, where applicable, finishing the interview. A theory placement test will also be administered. These evaluations determine course placement in applied music and theory. Candidates should complete auditions, theory tests, and interviews during a campus visit before starting classes. Early scheduling with the College of Music is strongly encouraged, preferably before summer orientation. Music education candidates follow identical audition processes as performance majors. After their second year or completing prerequisite coursework, students interview with an Admissions Board. Successful candidates gain entry to the Teacher Education Program and can enroll in advanced education courses.
