The College of Music aims to deliver exceptional training in musical disciplines while fostering innovation and scholarship across composition, education, music history, teaching methods, performance, and music theory. Through this mission, the college enhances musical experiences for its students, the broader university population, and Tennessee residents. Prospective music students (both first-year and transfers) must complete an applied music audition and theory assessment. Those pursuing music education, music history, or music theory/composition degrees must also conduct faculty interviews in their chosen field. Official music major status is only granted after successful audition completion and, where relevant, interview finalization. A theory placement test is also administered. These evaluations determine appropriate course levels for applied music and theory studies. Candidates should arrange to fulfill these prerequisites during a campus visit before starting classes. Early scheduling with the College of Music is strongly advised, with all requirements to be met no later than summer orientation. Music education candidates follow identical audition processes as performance majors. Following their second year or required coursework completion, students undergo an interview with the Admissions Board. Successful candidates gain entry to the Teacher Education Program and eligibility for advanced education courses.
