The Bachelor of Music is a specialized degree where over 65% of the curriculum focuses on musical studies. Aspiring musicians audition as vocalists or instrumentalists, committing to 3-4 years of private lessons (varies by concentration), performing in ensembles for 7-8 semesters, and presenting at least one recital alongside intensive music coursework.
At JMU, students receive conservatory-quality training while benefiting from the diverse offerings of a comprehensive liberal arts university. Music majors can specialize in one of six tracks: performance, composition, music industry, music education, jazz studies, or music theater. Graduates from the School of Music gain the necessary skills to convert their expertise into meaningful contributions - whether through teaching, performing, leadership, research, or creative work - making a tangible difference in the world daily.
