The Africana Studies Department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville focuses on generating and sharing cross-disciplinary knowledge concerning Africa, African Americans, and global African diaspora communities. It fosters analytical and innovative thinking by conducting thorough research, instruction, community engagement, and scholarly publications about the cultural expressions, artistic traditions, social structures, historical narratives, economic systems, and philosophical thought of African-descended populations globally. Africana Studies operates as a diverse, cross-field academic framework that grounds its research across local, national, continental, and worldwide contexts. The discipline views the Africana sphere as encompassing regions from Africa to the Americas, the Caribbean, Asia, and Europe.
