The 33-unit Chicano and Chicana Studies double major program provides specialized training in the field through a blend of introductory and advanced coursework. Celebrating its 50th anniversary during 2019-2020, the Chicana/o Studies Department upholds the foundational principles established by Dr. Ernesto Galarza. While initially created to serve CSUN's Chicana/o student population, the department has evolved through various historical periods - from the cultural revolutions of the 1960s-1970s to the conservative shifts of the 1980s-1990s and into modern times - maintaining its dedication to cultivating socially engaged critical thinkers.
Through humanizing educational methods and dialectical teaching approaches, the department integrates diverse perspectives to promote social equity. A key focus involves enhancing students' analytical abilities and communication skills. The curriculum explores the multifaceted Chicana/o experience across all academic disciplines except math and science. Additionally, the program equips students with professional skills for today's competitive job market while preparing them for advanced academic pursuits after completing their CSUN degree.
