Our physician assistant program is structured in two phases: classroom instruction and hands-on clinical training. The initial 12 months on the Vermillion campus focus on mastering foundational medical knowledge. The subsequent 12 months provide supervised clinical rotations under licensed physicians and PA mentors across diverse specialties including family practice, surgical care, and emergency medicine.
Physician assistants serve as vital members of medical teams, practicing across all medical specialties. These highly trained professionals assess conditions, develop treatment strategies, prescribe medications, evaluate therapies, and maintain exceptional patient care standards.
At USD, our PA program equips students with the comprehensive skills, adaptability, and responsiveness required for top-tier patient care. Key program advantages include evidence-based clinical training, a curriculum emphasizing compassionate care, and specialized focus on rural primary care needs. As participants in South Dakota's sole comprehensive health sciences program, you'll benefit from interdisciplinary learning alongside various healthcare students - exceptional preparation for collaborative practice. Throughout the 24-month program, you'll transition from academic study to clinical application, working directly with licensed practitioners across multiple medical specialties.
