The Department of Microbiology and Immunology provides a graduate program culminating in a Master's Degree in Microbiology and Immunology. Our program aims to equip students for scientific careers across various microbiology fields (such as bacteriology and virology) and immunology. Combining research experience with advanced coursework, we deliver comprehensive knowledge that fosters interdisciplinary thinking and problem-solving skills—essential qualities for today's scientists.
The two-year full-time M.S. program involves both traditional lectures and interactive workshops. Students analyze primary literature alongside faculty in journal clubs and refine presentation abilities through research forums. They work on faculty-led research projects, acquiring hands-on experimental training and scientific methodology. Professional development seminars and myHub workshops from the Office of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs further strengthen career-ready skills and post-graduation planning.
Under faculty supervision, students gain practical experience in experimentation and analytical reasoning through dedicated research projects. With around 40 participating faculty mentors, the program offers diverse research opportunities across its three disciplines, including both basic and clinical laboratory settings.
Research focuses on key faculty specialties like microbial pathogenesis, molecular genetics, virology, tumor immunology, immune responses, and immune regulation. This experience trains students in cutting-edge techniques for addressing critical microbiology and immunology challenges while preparing them for future career steps. The program concludes with a written thesis, formal thesis presentation seminar, and oral defense.
