The Microbiology Graduate Program (MGP) offers advanced education in fundamental scientific fields such as microbiology, immunology, and food safety, adopting a comprehensive scientific perspective. Participants will build a diverse academic background while specializing in at least one scientific area. The program primarily centers on microbiology and microbial pathogens affecting livestock and people, particularly focusing on infectious diseases and immune system reactions. Alumni typically secure positions in educational, governmental, and corporate settings.
Program acceptance requires a Microbiology faculty member's pledge to guide the candidate and provide sufficient resources for degree completion. Consequently, MGP students benefit from having an assigned advisor from day one. A restricted number of Graduate Assistantships are offered by the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences.

General requirements include: 3 letters of recommendation, curriculum vitae, statement of purpose, and unofficial transcripts of all colleges and universities attended are to be submitted electronically through the online application.
In addition to general Graduate College application requirements, the MGP application requires the
following:
Cumulative Grade Point Average > 3.0
Three letters of recommendation.
A Statement of Purpose describing research and career goals.
Curriculum vitae.
Unofficial electronic copies of all college and university transcripts are to be submitted with the online application.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - minimum composite score of 7, with no subject area below a 6
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - minimum score of 79 iBT (or 60 on the revised PBT with no section score lower than 15). Individual MyBest scores must also be dated within 2 years of the enrollment term to be considered valid.
