The Materials Science Program at the University of Rochester brings together faculty from diverse disciplines across multiple schools, including Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Medicine and Dentistry, and the Laboratory for Laser Energetics.
Founded in 1966 by Professor Ken Teegarden, the program now boasts over 60 faculty members and welcomes approximately 16 new master's and doctoral candidates each year.
Graduate students in this program can tailor their academic focus and research to specific materials science specialties within relevant departments. Admissions are determined by the materials science graduate committee, with both MS and PhD degrees granted by program faculty.
Earning a master's degree requires completing at least 30 graduate credit hours. Students may select between two tracks: Plan A (thesis option) or Plan B (non-thesis option), with Plan B being the standard path. Those opting for Plan A must secure a faculty advisor for thesis supervision and notify the graduate coordinator.
