Our MS in Marriage and Family Therapy Program equips graduates with comprehensive MFT expertise and practical skills to effectively serve diverse populations as relationship-focused professionals, emphasizing cultural sensitivity, self-awareness, and continuous professional development.
The program introduces students to foundational family therapy theories and clinical approaches. Being housed in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center offers students hands-on experience in a hospital-based clinical environment rather than a traditional academic setting.
This distinctive placement enables students to study mental health and family dynamics within an interdisciplinary team framework. During their second year, students undertake concurrent yearlong clinical placements at two locations: various Rochester community clinics alongside our on-site NYS-licensed facility, Strong Family Therapy Services.
Clinical trainees benefit from weekly individual and group supervision at both sites, led by AAMFT-certified supervisors or professionals with equivalent systemic therapy training qualifications.
The 60-credit Marriage and Family Therapy MS Program holds accreditation from COAMFTE and meets New York State licensure requirements. Our curriculum prepares therapists to navigate evolving healthcare and mental health landscapes.
Students complete all required core courses, including a capstone project, before beginning their clinical practicum. The hands-on training involves direct client interaction until students accumulate 500 supervised clinical hours working with individuals, couples, and family units.
