Master's programs specializing in composition and music education are available through either the graduate professional studies division (the MM degree outlined here) or the graduate research studies division (the Master of Arts). Every MM program, including composition and music education, maintains a significant performance component, necessitating an audition on a principal instrument or voice. While the MA program doesn't mandate an audition for entry, it may incorporate secondary-level applied study.
For one hundred years, the Eastman School of Music has served as one of the University of Rochester's professional institutions. Our community of educators and learners is committed to achieving the pinnacle of musical excellence.
The Master of Music (MM) is a degree centered on performance. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. Ideal candidates typically possess a Bachelor of Music degree or have completed a comparable core curriculum within another bachelor's program.
Both the MM and MA degrees offer concentrations in Composition and Music Education. The MM track for these specialties emphasizes performance as a key secondary element and requires an admission audition. The MA alternative focuses more on research as its secondary component and doesn't require auditions or applied lessons.
