Graduate students can pursue Master's degrees in composition and music education through two pathways: the professional-focused Master of Music (MM) program outlined here, or the research-oriented Master of Arts (MA). MM programs emphasize performance and mandate an audition on a principal instrument or voice, while the MA has no audition requirement but may incorporate secondary applied study.
The Master of Music degree centers on performance excellence. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, with preference given to those holding a Bachelor of Music degree or equivalent foundational coursework.
Both composition and music education are available as MM or MA concentrations. The MM track for these fields maintains a strong performance component and requires an admission audition. Conversely, the MA alternative emphasizes research and neither demands an audition nor includes mandatory performance instruction.
