The Master of Arts (MA) is an advanced research-focused degree that prioritizes strong writing and analytical abilities. Prospective students must demonstrate excellent English proficiency before undertaking thesis or dissertation work. Applicants need an accredited bachelor's degree for eligibility.
While no audition is necessary for MA admission, an interview is mandatory. Composition and Music Education candidates should carefully evaluate whether the MA or MM program better aligns with their professional aspirations and academic background.
This program serves two primary groups: those pursuing music theory teaching careers (with focus areas including pedagogy, aural skills, composition, and cognitive studies) and graduate students interested in combining performance degrees (MM or DMA) with music theory studies.
Core Theory & Pedagogy curriculum includes: Theory Teaching Methods, Advanced Theory Instruction, Modal/Tonal Counterpoint, Teaching Practicum (with performance component), Intermediate Keyboard Proficiency, Advanced Composition Techniques, and Tonal Music Analysis.
As a research-intensive degree, the MA program emphasizes scholarly writing and investigative skills. Students must exhibit complete mastery of written English before commencing their final research projects.
The MA program typically takes two years of full-time study to complete, with a maximum completion window of five years. Full-time residency requirements include one academic year (two for musicology students), while the Music Leadership MA concludes in one intensive academic year plus two summer sessions.
