The music theory program at UC Santa Barbara offers a foundational curriculum focused on tonal and contemporary music analysis, alongside specialized seminars covering diverse subjects. These courses blend musicological perspectives with theoretical approaches. The master's program typically takes three years, while the doctoral program spans six years for students entering with an existing master's degree. For those admitted to the combined MA/PhD track, both degrees can be earned within six years, with the MA awarded upon finishing coursework and exams. Additional details about the MA and PhD in Music Theory are available in the Graduate Program section of UCSB's General Catalog under the Music Department listings.
Applicants will normally be expected to have a bachelor of arts in music or a bachelor of music degree.
