The LSU School of Music provides challenging music theory programs for both bachelor's and advanced degree students. Our distinguished faculty includes prominent experts specializing in modern and contemporary music, American experimental and avant-garde styles, popular and heavy metal genres, teaching methodologies, mathematical approaches to music, transformational analysis, Soviet/Russian compositions, and linear analytical techniques.
Our bachelor's program—woven throughout various degree options within the School of Music—aims to enhance students' analytical abilities and musical proficiency through comprehensive coursework in tonal structures, contrapuntal techniques, musical forms, chromatic harmony, and post-tonal concepts.
For graduate students pursuing master's or doctoral (PhD) degrees, we provide focused theoretical training that readies them for specialized research or academic professions. The advanced curriculum employs diverse teaching strategies, such as inverted classroom models, digital learning tools, and live demonstrations, enabling students to bridge theoretical understanding with practical performance skills.
