The School of Music provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts degrees specializing in ethnomusicology, music history (musicology), music education, and music theory, as well as Master of Music degrees in performance, composition, conducting, and music education. Doctoral options include the Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, musicology, music education, and music theory, plus the Doctor of Musical Arts in composition, performance, and conducting. Musicology students explore Western music—both classical and contemporary—through historical and analytical lenses incorporating source research, performance analysis, and media perspectives. The ethnomusicology curriculum covers fieldwork techniques, musical anthropology, regional studies, and thematic topics, employing methodologies from cultural anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies. Given their close relationship, musicology students frequently incorporate ethnomusicological approaches, while ethnomusicology scholars regularly utilize historical research methods and archival materials in their studies.
