This program focuses on nurturing individuals with creative abilities in musical composition, blending theoretical knowledge, literature study, and analytical skills. We support growth across instrumental, vocal, and electro-acoustic composition, particularly emphasizing modern and innovative approaches. Ideal candidates should have prior experience with computer notation, MIDI applications, and theoretical studies in music.
Applicants need to provide a portfolio showcasing original works, which may include digital formats like CD/DVD, software files, or MIDI programs, along with at least one fully notated piece and one excerpt. Alternatively, they can submit analytical research papers or presentations delivered at regional/national theory conferences, including computer-assisted analyses in fields like Schenkerian analysis or spectromorphology.
Though GRE scores aren't mandatory for admission, prospective students aiming for UWM's Distinguished Graduate Student Fellowship or considering further graduate studies after their master's degree are encouraged to complete these exams early in their academic journey.
