The Master of Arts (MA) is an advanced research-focused degree that prioritizes strong writing and analytical abilities. Prospective MA students must demonstrate excellent English writing proficiency before undertaking thesis or dissertation work, and must hold an accredited bachelor's degree.
While no audition is needed for MA admission, an interview is mandatory. Those interested in Composition or Music Education should carefully evaluate whether the MA or MM program better aligns with their qualifications and career objectives.
The Music Education MA program for Initial plus Professional Certification covers research methodologies, assessment strategies, curriculum design, and music education's historical foundations. Participants will study instrumental/choral techniques, choose from various electives (such as music theory or composition), and conclude with either a fieldwork project or thesis.
Most MA programs don't require instrumental/voice auditions (except Music Leadership), though students may pursue performance instruction in consultation with advisors and faculty. Musicology and music theory students should develop keyboard skills.
