The Art Education program at Lamar Dodd School of Art emphasizes critical thinking, hands-on learning, and cross-disciplinary exploration. Students and instructors enjoy direct access to the Georgia Museum of Art, collaborations with diverse schools and community groups, and guidance from distinguished studio and art history professors. Together, we investigate how contemporary art, educational history, visual culture, community engagement, equity initiatives, and digital media intersect. Our graduates emerge as creative leaders who redefine traditional approaches through impactful local and global initiatives.
The Master of Art Education program accommodates both full-time students and working art educators, with most graduate courses scheduled for evenings. Continuous enrollment is required, with students maintaining registration for two out of three semesters annually. After completing 21 credit hours, candidates must successfully defend an Applied Project Proposal to advance in the program. The culminating requirement involves an oral examination of the final Applied Project, conducted by art education faculty. A minimum three-credit enrollment is mandatory during the graduation semester. While primarily preparing students for a Level 5 Certification, the program also offers pathways to initial art teaching certification (Level 4). Admissions are reviewed each semester.
