The Master of Arts (MA) is an advanced research-focused degree that prioritizes strong writing and analytical abilities. Prospective students must demonstrate excellent English proficiency before undertaking thesis or dissertation work, along with holding an accredited bachelor's degree.
While no audition is needed for MA admission, an interview is mandatory. Composition and Music Education candidates should carefully evaluate whether the MA or MM program better aligns with their qualifications and career objectives.
The Music Education MA curriculum for Initial plus Professional Certification covers research methodologies, assessment techniques, instructional design, and music education's historical foundations. Students specialize in General, Instrumental, or Vocal Music pedagogy, choose electives in areas like music theory or composition, and conclude with a practical field project or thesis.
As a research-intensive program, the MA demands exceptional academic writing and investigation capabilities. Students must prove advanced English writing skills before commencing their final research projects.
MA candidates typically finish within two years of full-time enrollment, though they have up to five years to complete requirements. The program requires one year of full-time residency (two for musicology students), while the Music Leadership MA condenses into a single academic year plus two summer sessions.
