The Linguistics Department at the University of Rochester is pushing boundaries in exploring humanity's unique language capabilities across multiple key areas.
We promote an integrated approach combining theory and practice, allowing undergraduate students to examine diverse linguistic patterns across various subdisciplines while emphasizing practical data gathering, analytical skills, clear writing, and evidence-based theoretical frameworks.
Every course incorporates interactive, experiential learning methods. Many students develop and finalize research projects during their coursework, providing excellent opportunities to connect with faculty and engage in meaningful research.
Our linguistics program examines the architecture of human language, teaching systematic methods for gathering, documenting, and interpreting linguistic information. The curriculum also integrates relevant courses from other college departments, bridging humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
For senior students, we provide an honors track featuring a year-long thesis research project that results in an honors thesis, supplementing the standard linguistics degree requirements.
