The Marine Biology Program enables students to discover the diverse field of marine biology while establishing a strong grounding in contemporary biological sciences, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and oceanography. Our program promotes cross-disciplinary learning that may encompass other marine-focused disciplines like aquaculture and fisheries, geological sciences, marine policy, marine environmental economics, maritime archaeology, oceanographic studies, maritime history and literature, and ocean engineering. Marine biology majors also have the option to pursue a minor or second major and engage with the URI Honors Program.
Beyond offering advanced coursework in marine biology topics, the program structure ensures students gain a solid understanding of modern biological principles, maintaining flexibility for diverse career paths. Upper-level marine biology classes taught by CELS faculty and Graduate School of Oceanography professors are conducted at URI's Kingston campus. Undergraduate students can utilize Bay Campus resources through research lab positions and internships at aquarium facilities affiliated with the Graduate School of Oceanography.
