The MSW program consists of a foundational year followed by an advanced year. Both years include core courses that equip students with essential knowledge for critical thinking and professional social work practice. During the advanced year, students select either the clinical or macro specialization. Beyond mandatory core courses, students enjoy significant flexibility in designing their academic path. They can opt for electives from any of Penn's eleven other graduate schools outside the School of Social Policy & Practice, or enroll in specialized certificate programs covering areas like aging studies, child welfare, criminal justice, global human rights, prisoner rehabilitation, healthcare, school social work, and others. The Master of Social Work program is designed with the firm belief that professional preparation requires blending knowledge, values, and practical skills. This synthesis is intentionally fostered through coordinated classroom learning and fieldwork that complement and strengthen students' educational goals. The curriculum is structured in two components: the foundation level introduces the profession and fundamental practice concepts for working with individuals, families, groups, and communities, while the advanced level allows specialization in chosen practice areas.

A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
