MSE:IPD candidates are engineering professionals seeking to thrive in entrepreneurial environments, dedicating equal time to problem identification and solution development. The MSE:IPD program equips students with an engineering foundation while teaching them to apply this knowledge to product design challenges. Students learn innovative design methodologies, fast prototyping approaches, and strategies for balancing design, technical, and commercial considerations. Through coursework, participants enhance their product-related engineering capabilities while understanding how these skills integrate into the broader design process. MSE:IPD scholars become proficient in prototyping methods, production techniques, and digital design tools, while augmenting their engineering expertise with business acumen and design principles.
Students applying to the MSE: IPD program must have a background in engineering.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
