A major in Intercultural Communication equips graduates for diverse professional paths including cultural liaison roles, international education coordination, newcomer integration services, educational content creation, and organizational diversity consulting. This curriculum also establishes robust training in ethnographic and discourse analysis methodologies, ideal for those pursuing intercultural research or advanced academic studies. While individual aspirations differ, all participants develop skills to examine linguistic, communicative, social, and cultural dynamics in human interactions. The Intercultural Communication master's program provides an interdisciplinary learning environment across the university. Beyond eight core classes, students select four specialized courses from Penn GSE and other University of Pennsylvania departments.
Admission to Penn GSE requires satisfactory completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. university or its equivalent prior to your matriculation into any program.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
