The Communication graduate program at Oklahoma University equips students to perform innovative research in specialized areas examining human communication processes, with a focus on social, psychological, political, and cultural impacts. Doctoral graduates typically pursue careers in academia, research, or communication-related fields leveraging their research expertise. Both master's and doctoral students usually join with interests aligned with one or more of our six specialization areas. Nonthesis M.A. candidates follow the same Program of Study guidelines, which include a comprehensive exam requirement. This exam involves synthesizing all coursework through broad review rather than replicating individual course finals. The eight-hour examination typically includes two 3-hour questions and one 2-hour question, with at least one question tied to a core course. All exams are closed-book, requiring students to study beyond standard coursework. Students must register for at least two credit hours during their exam semester. The Department of Communication's examination process includes a written component and may incorporate an oral section if requested by committee members.
