The Master of Landscape Architecture program features four integrated core sequences mandatory for all students (unless exemptions are granted based on prior experience). These include Design Studio, Workshop, Theory, and Media sequences, which interconnect both horizontally and vertically across the degree. At Penn, design serves as the cornerstone of our educational and research mission. We define design through three key dimensions: material practice (creating physical objects, spaces, and environments, including drawings and models), inquisitive practice (questioning, exploring ideas, and considering alternatives), and process-oriented practice (understanding landscapes as evolving systems and recognizing creative development as a procedural journey).
Students with an undergraduate degree in a field other than landscape architecture or architecture are eligible for three year program.
Students with an accredited bachelor’s degree in either landscape architecture or architecture are eligible for two year program.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
