Psycholinguistics employs experimental approaches to study the mental mechanisms involved in language understanding and speech production, their evolution, and how children form mental representations of language knowledge. At Penn, studies examine sentence processing in both adults and children, along with vocabulary development in infants and grown individuals. The Linguistics Ph.D. program at Penn covers diverse theoretical focuses and research techniques, all united by a dedication to precise, systematic examination of humanity's innate language learning and usage abilities. While rooted in formal generative linguistics, the program fosters intellectual exchange through the interplay of empirical data and theoretical viewpoints on language structure. Through partnerships with departments like computer science and psychology, we cultivate an interdisciplinary perspective on language studies. Beyond comprehensive education, students must develop expertise in their selected linguistics specialties, mastering relevant techniques and findings to enable meaningful academic discourse with peers both within and beyond the program.
