South Asian Studies is a multidisciplinary area that examines the culture, history, languages, arts, and social structures of nations including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bhutan. As the nation's first and most prestigious South Asian studies initiative, we explore both historical and modern aspects of a region encompassing one-fifth of humanity, while offering more language courses than any comparable U.S. program. Understanding this rapidly developing region—projected to surpass the U.S. as the world's second-largest economy—provides graduates with distinct advantages in today's competitive global workforce. Join a close-knit academic community where professors engage with students personally, whether pursuing a single or dual major.
International applicant should have completed a program of secondary education that would enable you to enter a university in your own country (e.g., A-levels, Abitur).
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
